D-DAY: Storming Normandy
During World War II, Fortress Europe was penetrated during the Normandy Invasion. This joint operation, code-named Operation Overlord, and also known as D-Day, was literally launched June 6, 1944 by the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Five beaches were targets by the Allies along Normandy, France. Juno, Gold, and Sword were the beaches stormed by Canada and the United Kingdom. The United States made their attack against Hitler's forces on Utah and Omaha beaches.
