ANNE MCCAFFREY (1926 - 2011)

Anne Inez McCaffrey was born in America, but she immigrated to Ireland after her divorce in 1970.  Though she became an Irish Naturalized Citizen, she was named the 22nd Grand Master of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2005.  In 2006, she was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.

This amazing woman majored in Slavic Languages and Literature while attending university.  She graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  She worked on the stage as a character actress and studied voice.

Anne McCaffrey was one of the first science fiction writers to reach NYT Bestseller.  She did so with her 1978 novel, The White Dragon.  She was the first woman to win a Hugo Award in fiction as well as the Nebula Award.  Because her science fiction inspired space exploration, Anne was honored with the Robert A. Heinlein Award in 2007.  For contributions to writing for teens, she won the 1999 Margaret A. Edwards Award.
