The Ultimate Sacrifice
Memorial Day is the time when we honor the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country - their lives.
This U.S. Federal holiday finds its origins in the aftermath of the American civil war, which claimed more lives than any other conflict as of yet in our history and incited the need for national cemeteries. Memorial Day differs from Veterans Day in that it remembers those who DIED in service while the latter commemorates ALL who have served. It is held on the last Monday in May and is traditionally recognized as the beginning of summer. The poppy is a symbol for the holiday.
