MARY SHELLEY

DID YOU KNOW?

#DidYouKnow is a Blog Series on www.jmnorthup.com and www.nornstriad.com

MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT SHELLEY (1797 - 1851)

Born the daughter of two activists -  British Political Philosopher William Godwin and Feminist Mary Wollstonecraft - this amazing author had a unique view of life.
Unfortunately, her mother passed away not long after her birth, but her father raised her to be the brilliant mind we know she was.

Mary Shelley met her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley while he was still married.  They ran off together when Mary was only sixteen years old, eventually marrying in 1816 after Percy's first wife committed suicide.  The couple struggled in the beginning of their relationship, being alienated even by her father, whom Percy had been a devoted student to.  They even lost their first child (a daughter born prematurely) in 1815.
Sadly, Mary Shelley was widowed when she was only twenty-four years old, when Percy died in July 1822, drowning after his boat turned over.

Mary Shelley is best known for her novel, Frankenstein.
