My Book Review of THE CLAYTON CHRONICLES: Horror Tales of the Undead

The Clayton Chronicles: Horror Tales of the UndeadThe Clayton Chronicles: Horror Tales of the Undead by Edwin Stark
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Deeper Story Than Just vampires!
My best friend gifted me this book and I wasn't sure what to expect when I started to read it. Right off the bat, I can say I loved the use of language. I felt the author used insightful words that helped to bring his tale to life for me in a deeper fashion. His choice of verbiage was in and of itself quite descriptive, adding to the overall feel and quality of the story for me. This was beautifully written and I liked the pace and style in which the author unfolded the narrative. I was floored learning that the author is not a native English speaker!
The characters were fascinating. I really enjoyed Sherwin and I loved the friendship between Sherwin & Clayton. The depiction of the anal retentive coroner made me giggle and added to the chemistry of the protagonists. Some of the characters were dark and devious, but it fit the plot perfectly, making an accurate portrayal of evil and horror.
I found I was fascinated by the authors version of vampires, but more so, of his descriptions of believers. His was a new take on things for me and one that added to the overall story. It made the characters more real and the added a new layer to the throng of vampire lore out there - faith! The introduction of the priest lent more intrigue and complexity. Very well done!
I definitely recommend this book. If you are into vampires, the battles between good & bad, horror, crime, or just good drama then this is a book you must read!

My Book Review of 2024

20242024 by H. Berkeley Rourke
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A Haunting Story of War and the Darkness of the Human Spirit!
This is a very interesting story, told in a post-war diary style. It sort of stressed me out with all of the battles, as I am certain it was intended to. The author takes the "old school" military mentality and uses it as a premise for the survival of his protagonists. It is reminiscent of the Viet Nam era veterans I grew up listening to. Of course, any military member from any time or branch will relate to the sense of duty and the defense of country and family.
I thought the author was spot on with how a nuclear war could be triggered and how clusters of militia could and would cause territorial wars within the different countries. I can't say that I would have handled the NSI in the same manner as the book portrayed. During war, an act of treason is grounds for death. I felt the writer made his ruthless killers a little too forgiving towards those who surrendered. Still, I admire the goodness of his lead characters and the thirst they had for peace.
This was a very technical book in regards to the weapons and guerrilla warfare. I understood the story was consumed with battles because it paralleled the life that had become “normal” for the main man, Will. However, I found I wanted to know everyone on a more intimate level than I was allowed… at least until I realized that sense of disconnect and isolation was probably intentional in order to bring the feel of the war to life. I am sure the way Will and his family had to live felt very harsh and forsaken in many ways.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys military stories or war tales with tactical strategies and a sense of patriotism.

My Review of KEEPING KATERINA

The 1840s: A time of increasing social awareness, particularly for progressive cotton mill owner Adrian Bennett and his son and business partner Christopher.
But one social issue Christopher has never considered much is violence against women. A Robert Browning poem and a chance encounter with Katerina Valentino change everything.
Katerina is in fear for her life from her father's constant beatings. That is, until Christopher becomes entranced by the delicate dark-haired beauty, and decides that he must rescue her from her father--by marrying her. But Katerina's years of abuse have left her physically and emotionally scarred. And those scars threaten the newlyweds' hope for happiness. Is Christopher's tender affection enough to help Katerina heal her broken spirit?

Keeping KaterinaKeeping Katerina by Simone Beaudelaire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Moving On Many Levels!
I both loved and hated this story. It was beautifully written and researched; an endearing and accurate period piece in Victorian times. Still, the horrors Katerina withstands are... hellish. Still, the promise of the story and the love from Christopher, her champion, is moving and heart-felt. Simone Beaudelaire never fails to give an emotional and tender rendition of her tales!
I was disturbed by the old traditions and laws regarding women. Still, I know history and this was spot-on. I loved the truth of the portrayal in the story, the realistic characters, and the goodness of the Bennett family. I have known people like the Bennett family and I have known those like the Valentino family. Unfortunately, you have to have thorns with roses, right? Still, the growth of the protagonists is something to cheer for and you can't help falling in love with the romance of the story, no matter the dark betrayals.
